Through the looking-glass

Article Abstract:

Merger and acquisition activity has occurred at near-record levels in the UK during 1997 and the early part of 1998. Some mergers and acquisitions produce economies of scale and market dominance benefits, but business experts maintain that both hostile and friendly takeovers generally fail to produce the expected benefits. Reasons for continuing interest in mergers and acquisitions include the drive for globalisation, corporate egotism, and easy availability of the necessary finance due to the buoyant economic climate. Firms can insure against costs of fighting hostile takeover bids.

Packaging produces a mixed bag

Article Abstract:

There has been consolidation in the printing and packaging sector and many major companies have disposed of unwanted activities which have then been acquired by other international companies. These include Potagua's disposal of Nyborg Plast, its UK polythene film products manufacturer. There has been strong acquisition activity internationally, with John Waddington and Jarvis Porter acquiring Dutch companies, and Danisco's acquisition of Chesterfield Packaging in the UK.

A voice of experience

Article Abstract:

George Cox is the new director general of the Institute of Directors and he agrees with outgoing director general Tim Melville-Ross that there is a need for closer links between business and society, and to improve on the image of directors. He aims to build on his predecessor's work in shaping the business environment in the UK, and is concerned that the IoD does not become a one-club player on the policy field.
