Throwing the book: PAP launches legal barrage against opposition leaders

Article Abstract:

Lawsuits have been filed against Tang Liang Hong, a lawyer, by members of the People's Action Party (PAP) in Singapore. They are claiming that he defamed them when he ran as a candidate of the opposition Worker's Party during the January elections. He linked with Worker's Party veteran J.B. Jeyaretnam and their campaign attracted many thousands who welcomed their criticisms of the PAP. Although the Workers' Party gained 45% of the popular vote, the PAP took most of the parliamentary seats. The PAP has previously mounted suits against opponents, but there is widespread debate about the current litigation.

Power Pruned

Article Abstract:

The Singaporean government has made several amendments to the constitution, which will reduce the power of the President, Ong Teng Cheong, to make presidential vetoes. Singapore elects its president for a term of six years to act as head of state, whilst the government is led by the Prime Minister. Up to 1991 the President's function had been mainly ceremonial, but an amendment to the constitution that year gave the President greater power.
