Ties that bind

Article Abstract:

Many Korean-Americans have responded to the economic crisis in South Korea by sending money home to their relatives. They can only really make a symbolic contribution to reviving South Korea's economy, but their generosity is serving to improve their image. Korean-Americans are also investing in Korean bonds, and Korean-American chambers of commerce are seeking to encourage people to buy more from South Korea. Few Korean-Americans have large economic links with South Korea, but they still feel strong emotional ties.

Taiwan's air advantage needs West's backing

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's formidable air force is a key link in the island's efforts to deter Chinese invasion. However, the technical advantage enjoyed by Taiwan could be significantly eroded if China succeeds in its efforts to buy a modern Airborne Early Warning radar system from Western and Israeli manufacturers. The US, which has a strong interest in Taiwan's security, should make clear its opposition to such a sale.

Ties that bind

Article Abstract:

The United States and the Philippines need to reestablish military relations. Such a move would allow the defenseless Philippines to more powerfully exert their claims of ownership of the Spratly Islands, and would make more uniform US military relations with the Asean nations. At this point, however, the Philippines is on its own in its dispute over the Spratlys with China.
