Tigers at bay

Article Abstract:

Indian delegates to an international seminar on tigers urged China to do away with practices that encourage the poaching of tigers. In China, Taiwan and South Korea tiger bones and other parts of tiger anatomy are used to make medicines, wines and aphrodisiacs. Demand for these products has fostered an international poaching operation that is particularly worrisome to India, where most of the few surviving tigers live. The Chinese delegation gave no indication of being persuaded. The meeting marked the 20th anniversary of India's Project Tiger conservation program.

Alphabet soup: Bengali primer in need of reform

Article Abstract:

Bengali traditionalism resists needed updates in the most common primer for that language, 'Varnaparichay,' written nearly 150 years ago. The book may be losing some of its influence because the illustrations it uses show things no longer common to childrens' experience. Its teaching methods for learning letters may also be inferior to more modern ones. Ironically, the author, Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, was a vocal proponent of change and modernism in his own day.
