To be a contender: presidential hopeful starts on the load road to office

Article Abstract:

Hsu Hsin-liang is running a long road is his quest for the presidency of Taiwan. Having already survived the first round of his Democratic Progressive Party's nominations, he now faces a 12-week runoff, ending Sept 24, against Peng Ming-min. TV debates between the two stirred little lasting interest due to the substantially similar views and policies the two espouse, but Hsu, who was once blacklisted by his former party, Kuomintang, says he is more moderate concerning independence from mainland China.

Look back in anger

Article Abstract:

Taiwan embarked on an official investigation and is set to release its findings on the Feb 28, 1947, uprising, in which 10,000 people were killed. Chiang Kai-shek's authoritarian rule that suppressed academic freedom had succeeded in making people collectively forget Taiwanese history and their sense of national consciousness. The report is particularly important since Taiwanese historians are exerting efforts to rewrite Taiwan's history to fill in the gaps that existed due to academic suppression.

Past time: government makes amends for 1947 massacre

Article Abstract:

The government of Taiwan has made an historic step in officially recognizing the scope and significance of the massacre of native Taiwanese in 1947 by the Kuomintang regime. However, the issue still remains so sensitive that the plaque remains blank on the $4 million memorial put up in Taipei. The island's legislature is also debating compensation to the families of those slain, costing some $500 million or more. Details on how the rampage began and who ordered it remain unclear.
