Too many or too few

Article Abstract:

Population growth is most rapid in the pooresr countries, yet population decline may start to be a problem from 2040. Ferility rates have fallen especially rapidly in developing countries. The median age of the world population could rise to 40, with concerns about health, employment, and pensions. The issue of providing for the aged when the family is unable to do so is likely to become increasingly important, since eventually the birth rate will drop to below the replacement level.
