Too much of a good thing: UN peacekeeping burden starts to tell

Article Abstract:

New Zealand's government is evaluating its extensive involvement in UN peacekeeping activities. New Zealand has sent members of its military to take part in 27 such operations since 1945, most recently in Cambodia. The electorate strongly supports the country's role in peacekeeping, while the military welcomes the chance to gain field experience. However, three problems are causing the government to reconsider these operations: rising costs, the loss of critical military personnel and the dangers they are exposed to in war-ravaged countries such as Cambodia.

Kiwi Travel International Airlines created turbulence in Australia and New Zealand's air-travel markets with its Aug 23,1995 launch, establishing a low-fare route across the Tasman Sea. Some 9,000 passengers have since flown Kiwi, despite problems caused by burst airplane tires, but stiffer competition is about to hit. Air New Zealand subsidiary Freedom Air International will start on a more convenient route on Dec 8, offering competitive fares, and others will soon follow. A flap over routes and ownership of national airlines continues.

Fear of frying: falling ozone levels again prompt precautions

New Zealand's radio and television networks will again forecast 'burn time' warnings during their summer weather forecasts starting in Dec 1992. This is a part of government campaigns directed at modifying New Zealanders' outdoor life habits to lessen the incidence of skin cancer and eye cataracts, believed to be caused by the sun's ultraviolet radiation B rays. New Zealand, along with Queensland, Australia, has the highest skin cancer incidence in the world.
