Tough trip for Christopher

Article Abstract:

China does not appear enthusiastic over the impending visit of US Sec. of State Warren Christopher to Beijing. This stems from Christopher's disastrous 1994 visit to Beijing and the uncertainty of Chinese officials as to whether Pres. Clinton will fulfill his pre-election promises to the Asian nation. The US, on the other hand, wants to find out whether the visit will set the stage for more high-level meetings or whether it will be used by China as a testing period. Among other issues, Christopher's visit will focus on the US' support of China's entry into the World Trade Organization.

Bereuter has hands full managing Sino-U.S. policy

Article Abstract:

House International Relations subcommittee on Asia Chmn. Douglas Bereuter has been given the difficult task of ensuring that US-China policy is not undermined by anti-Chinese sentiments in Congress. Bereuter has enjoyed some measure of success, toning down a resolution that would have committed US troops to the defense of Taiwan in the event of attack and blocking a bill to deny normal trading status to China. However, Bereuter is not confident of his ability to hold off a growing move to deny most-favored-nation trading status to China.

China faults the western press for its poor image abroad

Article Abstract:

China is blaming some members of the Western press for inaccurate and often biased reporting of the country. China laments that western reporters have undermined China's image abroad with their continued use of images of the crackdown of pro-democracy demonstrators in Tiananmen Square in 1989. China intends to remedy its image-problem by issuing directives on its government departments and embassies abroad to hold more news conferences. It has also encouraged foreign diplomats and observers to visit the country.
