Tournament of shadows: opposition sceptical over latest efforts to end Tajik war

Article Abstract:

Tajikistan's government has agreed to negotiate with the various Tajik rebel groups instead of pursuing a military victory. The Russian-supported Tajik government in Dushanbe has been fighting a civil war against Islamic, nationalist and democratic opponents. Deaths among Russian soldiers in Tajikistan and demands by the international community led Russia to prevail upon the Dushanbe government to accept a political solution. However, the opposition groups question the sincerity of Russia's new policy.
