Toy makers feel pinch as rise in oil prices lifts cost of plastic

Article Abstract:

Investors are worried that the high price of oil will hurt the toy industry in China. The process of putting a new toy on the market can take one year, and a wholesale price must be committed to early on which may not be a true reflection of the price of costs, particularly petroleum. Smaller toy makers may expect a harder year.

Mattel's profit falls slightly on Barbie weakness

Article Abstract:

Mattel Inc. of the United States posted a net income decrease of 1.8 percent as sales of Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels toy cars slowed. The toy industry giant reported net income of $279.2 million and sales of $1.84 billion in the fourth quarter. Sales in the United States were down by three percent, while sales in international markets were up three percent.
