Trade off: de-industrialization takes toll in Hong Kong

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's shift from a manufacturing to a service-based economy has thrown many women aged 35 and older out of work, and gives them few opportunities for re-employment. Most of the 423,019 manufacturing jobs lost in the past decade were held by women, many of whom have little education because the current 9-year schooling requirement was not yet in place. The government offers retraining programs, but few of these women who pass through them then land a job, and the present high unemployment worsens the problem.

Mooncakes over Hong Kong

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong holds a festival in fall each year when mooncakes are eaten which symbolize family ties. The aim of the Mid-Autumn Festival is to spot the Divine Archer's Wife, called Chang E, and the Jade Rabbit, both of which reside on the moon. There are more than 30 varieties of mooncake sold in Hong Kong, including low-cholesterol cakes, though older people favor yolks and lard. Consumption of mooncakes is seen as an economic indicator and consumption in Sep 1996 was judged indicative of an economic upturn.
