Travail at Wye

Article Abstract:

The Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, has accepted a US compromise proposal on the future of the West Bank, but Israel is seeking more security measures, including measures against Hamas. This includes attacks on Hamas' activities in clinics, mosques and schools The Palestinian Authority would face problems if it took such action against Hamas and no measures were taken against Israeli extremists who hate Palestinians. Arafat cannot promise that terrorism will cease, but this should not prevent progress toward peace.

Land to take and to give away

Article Abstract:

Israeli troops are being withdrawn from parts of the West Bank in line with the Wye agreement between Israel and the Palestinians, while at the same time land confiscations are taking place near Jewish settlements. Official road-building projects and unofficial expansions of settlements are taking up land previously used by Palestinian farmers. There are Palestinian demonstrations against land confiscations, but the Palestinian Authority wishes to avoid physical confrontations with the army or the settlers.

Barak's chance

Article Abstract:

Israel has an opportunity to promote peace in the Middle East under Ehud Barak as prime minister. Barak has a comfortable majority and Arab countries are relieved that the previous government has gone. His initial steps give hope for peace, and he sees the Palestinian problem as important in terms of its effect on Israeli-Arab relations. The Palestinians want agreements to be implemented, and Israel should seek to make rapid progress both in implementing these and in seeking a final settlement.
