Family matters: modern day tensions strain Southeast Asia's social fabric

Article Abstract:

Economic changes in Southeast Asia's more developed countries have sent shock waves through the family structures that make up the social fabric, with the consequences still emerging. Migration, a mindset that links consumption with status, and the time and energy sapped by modern big-city life have taken a toll on peoples' ability and willingness to provide social support to family members. Among other effects, this shifts the burden toward the state, though some governments have had some success meeting these needs without spending.

Traveller's tales

Article Abstract:

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad is urging prosperous Malays to look towards Eastern countries such as Japan for acquiring education, jobs or adopting a business philosophy. He is against the materialistic attitude of the West. However, he fails to recognize that the Japanese are as materialistic as Westerners. Moreover, Malaysians in Japan are facing cultural and work related problems. Japanese investors in Malaysia are also hesitant to hire Malaysians as managers. Hence Japan cannot serve as a role model for Malaysia.

Traveller's tales

Article Abstract:

The quest for economic development and modernity has resulted in the erosion of traditional social and cultural values in Malaysia. The country's breathtaking pace of development has imbued most Malaysians with crass pragmatism and a materialist mentality. The most apparent example of the clash between past and present in Malaysia lies in the political establishment's questioning of the rights and privileges of the traditional Malay rulers.
