Travelling salesman

Article Abstract:

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has won some support for the UN-sponsored peace process in his country. In Mar 1992, he travelled to the US and Japan to press for continued international support of UN peacekeeping operations in Cambodia. According to him, delays in funding have been jeopardizing ongoing peace efforts in his country. Although the US is required to shoulder 30% of the costs of the UN's peacekeeping operations, fiscal restraints and the recession are hampering the release of funds.

Battle by statute

Article Abstract:

The US announced on Apr 1992 that it had revised its trade laws to enable litigation against protectionist activities of foreign companies. The move was widely perceived as an attack against the Japanese "keiretsu" (cartel) system, and drew tough remarks from Japanese officials. In return, Japan plans to legislate countermeasures to the US law, which includes prohibiting Japanese companies from complying with US Court rulings and from presenting documents for investigation to US officials.

Passing the bullet

Article Abstract:

The US indirectly criticized Japan's economic policies for their role in the world economy's difficulties during the Group of Seven's (G7) Apr 26, 1992 meeting in Washington, DC. Expecting Germany to be the target of criticism, Japan was taken by surprise and failed to acknowledge the accusation. Japan, however, is not making any reforms in its present economic policies to suit G7 interests.
