Traveller's tales

Article Abstract:

Industrial and economic development in Pusan is exacting a steep environmental price. The city's canals are contaminated with chemical run-offs such as cadmium, mercury and arsenic. As a result, the toxic levels of soil and water are rising, making running water undrinkable. The absence of treatment facilities is one of the main problems, leaving viscous chemical mixtures in the canals. Pusan's simplistic and insufficient response to the environmental problem is to subvert, pave and construct over the canals.

Traveller's tales

Article Abstract:

Both Japanese and South Korean companies including Sony, Sanyo, Matsushita and Samsung, have set up modern factories in Indonesia. Although most of the Indonesian work force has been engaged in farming, the companies relied on intensive training and paternalistic management to orient the workers towards factory life and scientific production techniques. The Hasi footwear factory has been particularly successful in using paternalistic management to help Indonesian workers switch from farms to factories.

Traveller's tales

Article Abstract:

The US continues to maintain the aircraft carrier USS Independence along Korea's coast as a power base in northeast Asia. Although the Koreans have taken conflicting stances on the US' role in South Korea, some Americans find themselves the target of false accusations. A case in point is the alleged theft of Korean art by Gregory Henderson, a former diplomat. He was accused by former South Korean Pres Park Chung Hee of stealing precious ceramics from the country in retaliation to the Park government.
