Putting Mind over matter

Article Abstract:

The Mind Zone in the New Millenium Experience Co.'s Millenium Dome has been designed by the practice of architect Zaha Hadid. Design work on the project began in 1998 with construction starting in spring 1999. The zone's wedge-like shape is sympathetic to the Dome's fixed geometry and consists of a series of strips, linked by ramps culminating in an elevated bridge offering views across the Dome.

Triumph of a tired view of tradition at Windsor

Article Abstract:

Sidell Gibson has won the architectural competition to rebuild the parts of Windsor Castle damaged by fire in November 20, 1992. However, Gibson's plans are regressive in design. St George's Hall will have a new roof made of unseasoned oak. The opportunity of improving on Sir Jeffry Wyatville's architecture has been missed to a certain extent.

Musical box

Article Abstract:

The new building designed by Associated Architects for the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra retains the main facade of an unlisted 1920s industrial building. The building is based around an auditorium which can be used for many different purposes. The new south elevation is made on a welded steel frame, with no expansion joints. The auditorium is surrounded on four sides by three levels of cellular spaces housing dressing rooms, offices and studios. The building has few non-functional features.
