Troubled flightpath

Article Abstract:

British Aerospace PLC's BAe146 aircraft is facing problems in the marketplace. Only 237 of the various models directed at different market segments have been sold in 13 years. The aircraft is considered unreliable and also has a problem in its seating arrangements which makes it uneconomical. British Aerospace is planning to produce the RJ series of aircraft which are an improved version of the BAe146. However, BAe146's poor reputation in the market is likely to rub off on the RJ series. Moreover, British Aerospace is likely to find it difficult to promote the two-engine RJ models after having widely advertised the benefits of the four engines of BAe146.

Data in distress

Article Abstract:

Problems have plagued the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) since it was set up in 1992. GMDSS uses satellites and digital radio to coordinate emergency agencies such as Hongkong's Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC). However, false alarms caused chiefly by improperly used or discarded radio beacons and the lack of a continuously updated international database of ships have kept GMDSS from working properly. MRCC has partly rectified the problem by enlarging its own database, but more comprehensive improvements, such as a computer bulletin board for GMDSS, are needed.

Ready for boarding: Hong Kong and U.S. strike air-service pact

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong and the US have reached an accord on air route rights after eight years of negotiation, but the colony's talks with Australia are just beginning. The US agreement gives Cathay Pacific Airways firect-service access beyond the US West Coast, initially to Chicago and NY, as well as the right to fly between the US and Canada and two other points. The US won similar rights into Asia. Talks with Australia will involve revising the existing pact; Australia's lack of fifth-freedom potential is one problem.
