Turbulence ahead: fund managers warn that Asia markets are entering a volatile phase

Article Abstract:

Asia's stockmarkets can expect a volatile second quarter in 1996, following a strong first quarter, as money from the US and elsewhere surges in again and investors display renewed confidence. Experts warn against riding indices, saying selective stock-picking is essential due to uncertainty about short-term interest rate moves in the US. Low rates worldwide suggest no more cheap capital is forthcoming, complicating the issue. Japan's pension-fund reforms are promising, and Australian mining stocks look attractive.

Confidence booster; Indonesian power project secures quick financing

Article Abstract:

A financing agreement for Indonesia's Jawa Power project represents several major milestones, say insiders and observers. It took just 18 months to arrange the $1.7 billion in financing, and institutional investors and banks came together on it for what may be the first time ever. The government did not guarantee the project, but President Suharto's son Bambang Trihatmodjo controls a company with a 15% stake. German giant Siemens Power Ventures, which has 50% of Jawa, badly needed such a project in Asia.
