Turning point

Article Abstract:

Members of Indonesia's Chinese population are facing the choice of whether to leave their country or to stay and fight for equal rights in Indonesian society. The Chinese population in Indonesia has good entrepreneurial skills and controls much of the wealth of the country, despite forming only 3.5% of the population. However, the Chinese people have been subject to violence, rape and arson attacks, which escalated during the May 1998 riots, and they have never been able to participate as equal citizens in Indonesia. The way forward is unclear but different groups are offering diverse solutions.
