UIH wins $133 million judgment against Wharf Cable

Article Abstract:

United International Holdings Inc. (UIH) of Denver has been awarded US$133 million after winning a lawsuit against Wharf Holdings Ltd. over fraud. The dispute involves the fraudulent setting up of Wharf Cable television network in Hong Kong. Wharf Holdings had allegedly promised UIH a 10% interest purchase in the cable firm in exchange for the technical expertise in setting up the company. The case is expected adversely affect Wharf Cable's stocks which have lost some 24% in 1997 due to concerns about exorbitant start-up costs.

Direct-response pitches slice-n-dice colony TV

Article Abstract:

Direct response marketers bought 6,556 hours of television time in 1994, a sharp rise from 2,800 minutes in 1993. Direct response marketers pay only 1 3 of the full television advertising rate of about 15,000 Hong Kong dollars through a profit-sharing arrangement with television broadcasting companies. To order items, televiewers just dial a telephone number, place orders and give their credit numbers. Items arrive about three weeks later. K-Tel and Interwood Marketing Ltd. are the leading direct marketers in Hong Kong.

Chen Hsong provides training, scholarships, to overcome colony's shortage of engineers

Article Abstract:

Chen Hsong Holdings Ltd. has successfully overcome the lack of qualified engineering graduates plaguing Hong Kong companies by sponsoring engineering scholarships and conducting its own in-house training for employees. The training consists not only of rigid, technical lessons, but also of long weekend hikes aimed at building team spirit. With these programs, Chen Hsong has limited staff turnover to around 3-4% annually, compared to 20% in most Hong Kong businesses.
