UK: FUNDS WITH CAT MARK OFFER BEST PERFORMANCE

Article Abstract:

Funds with the UK Cat mark showed the best performance in the 19 months up to end November 200, according to research undertaken by Fitzrovia on behalf of Norwich Union (UK), leading insurance company. The research suggests that 20% of funds without the Cat mark did not break even following the launch of individual savings accounts, and that all those with the mark made a profit. According to the communications director of Autif, Anne McMeehan, however, whilst Cat-marked funds have lower charges, the research does not necessarily show that the performance is better, and stock selection should also be taken into consideration.

UK: TRACKER FUNDS NOT SO BADLY HIT

Article Abstract:

UK tracker funds fell by around 16% from September 2000 to March 2001, but were not so badly affected as actively managed funds. According to the marketing manager of Virgin Direct, Gordon Maw, some 65.3% of funds in the All Companies sector showed a decline of 16% or more, whilst the fall for trackers was around 16%, and the Virgin UK Index Tracker showed a fall of 15.1%. A survey commissioned by Virgin in 2000 and conducted by Glasgow University's professor of finance, Simon Keane, showed that in a bear market, but not overall, the safest investment is a bank account, and that passive investments are safest overall.
