UK: HARVEST VENTURE CAPITAL TRUST TO BE WOUND UP

UK Venture Capital Trusts (VCTs) are failing to attract funds, and Old Mutual Securities has closed its Harvest VCT as a result, having raised only GBu 1mn in five weeks. According to the director of research for the Tax Shelter Report on VCTs, Martin Churchill, just over 25% of the amount needed by VCTs has been collected. According to the deputy managing director of Bestinvest of London, UK, independent financial adviser, Jason Hollands, the troubled market is experiencing a surfeit of VCT schemes.

UK: VANGUARD PLANS EXPANSION

Vanguard, the mutual fund manager from the US, has announced plans to extend operations in Europe with the introduction of a range of index funds for fee-based IFAs. The initial UK offering from the company will be seven Dublin-registered Ucit funds, complemented by the launch of the Global Government Bond Index fund. All the funds, except for the Prime Liquidity Portfolio, are tracker funds, which Vanguard expect to attract between 0.3% and 0.5% in total charges in the UK.

UK: GOVETT SHAREHOLDERS DEFEAT LIQUIDATION CALL

Over 88% of Govett Investments shareholders were responsible for defeating plans for the liquidation of the GBu 29mn Govett Asian Smaller Companies Investment Trust. Liquidation proposals were suggested by former Regent Europe Asset Management, Charlemagne Capital, which would have benefited at the expense of long term investors.
