UK to trial air-ground data communications system

Article Abstract:

The UK Ministry of Defense intends to test a portable ground station based on the MD-1295/A IDM improved data modem of Symetrics Industries. The agency plans to use the portable ground station as a terrestrial digital communications link for its fleet of WAH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopters. The Symetrics IDM is already part of the specified WAH-64D communications fit but is currently only able to exchange target data with other Apaches or TACFIRE protocol-using US Army artillery command systems. The digital transfer for the helicopters has been identified by a senior British officer during the Shephard Fighter Helicopter Conference as a big problem.
