U.K.'s Boots to refocus on drugs with Alliance UniChem merger

Boots Group PLC of the United Kingdom is planning a merger with Alliance UniChem PLC also of the United Kingdom that would give the drugstore chain a combined value of 3 billion Pounds or $5.28 billion. The name of the combined pharmacy and drug distributor would be Alliance Boots with over 2,000 retail pharmacies.

Linde agrees to buy gas rival BOC for $14 billion

Linde AG of Germany is to buy BOC Group PLC of the United Kingdom for 8 billion Pounds ($14 billion). The acquisition will create the largest industrial-gases concern in the world. European Union cross-border mergers by German companies increased to $50 billion in 2005, up from $31.9 billion in 2004.
