UN speaks out on Hong Kong: human-rights panel asks for reports on territory after 1997

Article Abstract:

The United Nations Human Rights Committee has advised China not to alter or abandon the Hong Kong Bill of Rights Ordinance enacted under British rule. The UN committee is also interested in receiving human-rights reports about Hong Kong after 1997, when Britain hands over Hong Kong to China. The Bill of Rights set a standard for human rights. China, however, believes the Bill interferes with the Basic Law, which is to be the governing constitutional law in the colony after 1997. The Chinese may want to further consider this position and cooperate with the UN for their own benefit.

New class struggle

Article Abstract:

The people of China are increasingly resorting to class-action lawsuits to air their grievances. The suits are permissible under a Civil Procedure Law which came into force in 1991, allowing individuals to join together to demand justice. The cases being heard in the courts are those which accord with the central government policies over which the government has difficulty controlling local government and factory managers. Examples of successful class-action suits include a case brought by duck and fish farmers who lost their livelihoods due to industrial water pollution.

Shanghaied: strong-arm tactics irk foreign investors

Article Abstract:

Kidnapping and other illegal dispute-resolution tactics persist in China but are exaggerated in the Western press that does not perceive the huge surge in overall business deals in China. Most disputes are resolved before reaching the litigation or arbitration stage, say experts, and court-ordered remedies are almost always enforced. Most problems have involved expatriate Chinese operating in the interior provinces where modern notions of law and justice are not yet widely understood.
