UPM to acquire Champion, creating a top paper group

UPM-Kymmene Corp. has reached an agreement to acquire Champion International Corp. for $6.5 billion (6.59 billion euros). The acquisition will form one of the three largest paper and pulp entities in the world.

GEC is set to acquire Fore Systems of U.S

Article Abstract:

General Electric Company PLC of Britain has agreed to acquire FORE Systems Inc of Pennsylvania for $4.5 billion. GEC will pay $35/share in cash for the Internet switching equipment maker, a 40% premium to FORE's share price on Apr 23, 1999. FORE will be a stand-alone subsidiary of GEC, and will keep its brand name and marketing operations separate. Some analysts felt GEC had paid too much, but GEC CEO George Simpson said the price was comparable to the $20 billion Lucent Technologies paid for Ascend Communications.
