US BANKS OUT OF SANCTIONS NET

Article Abstract:

The US banks can continue to operate in India despite sanctions imposed by the US government against India. The sanctions are only applicable to US bank loans and credit to the government. The term `government' will be defined by the US executive order. The US government is expected to announce the executive order before the end of June 1998. This will also clarify issues like whether US banks can hold treasury bonds, what could constitute government loan and credit and if US banks can deal with public sectors in India. (uh)
