US Congress approves $40bn bill for airports

Article Abstract:

A $40 billion airport improvement bill to be used for higher spending for airport construction and equipment, and modernization of the country's air traffic control system has been approved by the US Congress. The bill also includes a provision that would increase fees on passenger tickets by as much as $6 per round trip. Most of the increase will be used for the rebuilding and expansion of old airports. The bill will also provide federal grant money for improving local airport facilities.

San Francisco airport on a roll

Article Abstract:

The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has more than doubled its revenues in the past 10 years to reach $302 million in fiscal year (FY) 1999 that ended Jun 30, 1999. During the same period, passengers handled by the airport incresed from 26.9 million in FY 1990 to 32.9 million in FY 1999, while cargo went up from 556,000 tons to 800,000 tons. In total, SFO is regularly being used by 45 major passenger airlines and another 21 commuter, charter and cargo operators.

Los Angeles Airports on environment fast track

Article Abstract:

Los Angeles World Airports will ensure that half of the vehicle fleet will burn clean fuel by 2003, an effort that is part of an aggressive programme calling for the enhancement of air quality and regional traffic. The program also calls for the installation of 20 additional recharging stations with free parking for electric cars by 2001 and the testing of a fully-electric 'push-back' tug intended for the handling of B767 aircraft.
