U.S. airline shake-up looks unavoidable; widening losses erode cash bailout, and costs are hard to cut

Article Abstract:

The major U.S. airlines report a collective third-quarter loss of $2.4 billion. Without the government's $2.5 billion bailout funding, the losses would have been $4.2 billion. Lower airfares haven't helped get passengers back in the air, nor increase corporate spending on travel. The next $2.5 billion from the government isn't expected to be enough help during the fourth quarter. Airline executives say they may have to merge their resources to survive.
