Fed raises rates by a quarter point

The Federal Reserve Board's decision to raise the short-term interest rate in the U.S., follows several years during which the rate has been at emergency lows. By increasing the rate by a quarter of a percentage point, the agency is signaling its belief that the U.S. economic growth is picking up.
