Ugly face of reforms: model village defies police murder probe

Article Abstract:

Daqiuzhuang, a rapidly growing village in China near the port city of Tianjin, has clashed with regional authorities over a murder that occurred in Dec 1992. Under leader Yu Zuomin, Daqiuzhuang has put Deng Xiaoping's philosophy of capitalistic-style economic expansion into practice by rising in 10 years from an agricultural village to a factory center with the highest per capita output of any Chinese town. However, the incident in which four residents reportedly killed an accused embezzler in a mock court has led Yu to block investigations by officials from Tianjin.

Reduce speed ahead

Article Abstract:

China's National People's Congress recently convened and heard a speech by Premier Li Peng that concentrated on economic themes. His strong criticisms implied a lesser role for Vice-Premier and economic tsar Zhu Rongji. He called for slower growth to rein in inflation and condemned decadence and graft. The current power struggle appears to be among communist hardliners rather than with reformers. There may be future conflict between those those favoring party decree and those supporting rule by law.

Too hot for comfort

Article Abstract:

China's Gross National Product registered a growth rate of 10.6% during the first half of 1992. Chinese conservative leaders greeted the news with enthusiasm while liberal reformers expressed reservations about the possible effects of the growth rate on the future of the economy. Liberals warn that the figures could trigger double-digit inflation and plunged the country into an economic recession.
