Ultimate penalty: East Timor leader gets life imprisonment

Article Abstract:

An Indonesian court imposed a life sentence on East Timorese resistance leader Jose Alexandre Gusmao, alias Xanana, on May 21, 1993. The penalty indicates that Indonesia will resort to severe measures to pacify East Timor, which was a Portuguese colony until Indonesia occupied it in 1976. Xanana, a leader of the Fretilin guerrilla organization that has been struggling for East Timorese independence, was convicted of various charges including encouraging a separatist rebellion. Foreign governments and human rights groups declared the conviction unfair and the sentence excessive.

In but out: Indonesia continues to integrate East Timor

Article Abstract:

Indonesia is still trying to fully integrate East Timor to its political system 17 years after the Indonesian military attempted to pry the territory from the hands of the Portuguese. Indonesia's infrastructure projects and social programs have yet to convince the residents of East Timor. These inhabitants feel adversely toward the annexation because of Indonesia's employment problems and other social inequalities. Education, however, might help Indonesia gain the confidence and trust of East Timorese.

The shadow of Dili

Article Abstract:

Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating is trying to ease the strained relations between Australia and Indonesia brought about by the treatment of pro-independence marchers in Dili, East Timor. Indonesia, however, suspects Australia of trying to intervene in its internal affairs. Furthermore, Australia's attempts to seek acceptance in the Southeast Asian region have made member nations wary of Australia's motives.
