Unattached on the attack: new twist to DoE review

Article Abstract:

The response of the Royal Insititute of British Architects (RIBA) to the Department of the Environment's review of the registration process for architects has been criticised by unattached architects. The RIBA council argues for the retention of a body to register architects and suggests RIBA could act for architects in the way the Law Society does for the legal profession. Unattached architects propose a new Arcuk, which would register architects and be independent. They would wish half the members of the Arcuk council would be lay persons.

All for one and one for all

Article Abstract:

The statutory registration of architects in the United Kingdom should be retained and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) should be responsible for it. The RIBA council is debating future policy on registration of architects and the Architects Registration Council. Registration has little value since the public recognise only academic qualifications and membership of RIBA. The majority of architects favour registration but RIBA, using the Law Society as a model, should be preferred to an independent body such as Arcuk.

A register of qualified architects is sufficient

Article Abstract:

Architects do not need to defend their legal protection under registration. The profession already has lists of qualified and chartered architects together with a directory of practices. These listings should be made widely available and would enable the public to choose qualified and chartered architects as well as being a means of raising income from entries in the business directory. Legal registration on top of this is unnecessary and too expensive for many architects.
