Understanding your ground

Article Abstract:

Problems associated with working in the ground, rather than above it, are often the result of a misunderstanding of the ground conditions. Difficulties can also arise if the responsibility for ground investigation, geotechnical design and construction has been divided up. Misunderstanding the ground conditions is most likely to result from lack of data or from not devoting enough time to studying the conditions. Lack of clarity about responsibility for dealing with ground conditions can lead to additional time and financial burdens.

Cultivating a living continuity

Article Abstract:

Establishing a cohesive experienced working team is vitally important when undertaking restoration of historic buildings. A building must be studied thoroughly to determine the type of work needed to be carried out. Financial and logistical aspects must be planned for, with a clear time constraint imposed by all parties involved. Restoration work must be viewed in the wider context of the building, without resorting to over-specialization which may unbalance the successful restoration.
