Virtual-reality research has followed two objectives: immersion of the senses as an end, for entertainment or training applications; or a means of interacting with computing power to affect the real world, for such uses as long-distance surgery and bomb disposal. New advances are described.

Alphaworlds, a three-dimensional (3-D) Internet chat environment, is one of several new computer products and services that feature 3-D graphics. However, the quality of the 3-D and virtual reality images that have made their way to personal computer desktops remains less than ideal.

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad plans to invest as much as $40 billion on the Multimedia Super Corridor in Kuala Lumpur. The 293-sq-mi complex will be designed to attract high-tech industries. However, a shortage of trained labor could pose problems for the complex.
