UniCredito Italiano SpA was forced to respond to rumors that it was proposing a takeover attempt for Banca Commerciale Italiana SpA (BCI). A UniCredito spokesperson stated that the bank was not currently engaged in a possible takeover bid for Banca Commerciale. The rumors caused BCI's stock value to increase 8.6% to 6.93 euros ($7.55). on March 10, 1999.
