The devaluation of the yen has brought Japan's exporters bigger profits than ever, but the government does not believe manufacturing alone can revive the economy. Japan plans to reform regulations for the energy, transportation, telecommunications, retail and house construction industries.

The so-called 'adult entertainment' industry has been a pioneer in various types of electronic technologies, with videoconferencing on personal computers being one of the latest. If the usual trend continues, the industry will create a path for more conventional businesses.

Columbia Communications in Hawaii is a perfect example of the problems one can have managing a telecommunications firm whose goals are counter to those of Intelsat. Intelsat has a virtual monopoly on intercontinental satellite signal transmission.
