Urban design and the physical environment

Article Abstract:

Urban design in Australia is aimed at achieving targets related to various human needs. Emerging themes include a trend toward streetscapes; contextualism, where each element of a city should reflect the city as a whole; the combination of form and land use; the handling of issues such as urban renewal, low-cost housing, environmental protection, equity and accessibility; and greater emphasis on the suburbs. The use of vegetation, micro-climate, and water and soils as design factors is detailed, together with the implications of government regulations.

The English planning lottery

Article Abstract:

Land betterment and distribution require greater regulation if a fair and equitable status quo is to be created. Suggestions include: the definition of public interest and role in the organisation of the land development process; the development of a system which is fair in all areas; the control of negotiation within rules; and the achievement of desired development on locations determined by the public. Details of the Spanish system for regulating development is included as a comparison to that practised in the UK.
