In May of 2000, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and Hong Kong consumer protection groups were investigating the pornographic web sites of companies like Celtline Holdings Ltd. Consumers had complained the web sites' downloaded "dialer" software gave them expensive long-distance telephone connections without their knowledge.

Faceless web gives fraudsters ideal set for credit-card crimes

Article Abstract:

According to one of Indonesia's biggest banks, BCA, over 70% of online credit-card purchases in Indonesia are fraudulant. An Internet fraud gang based in Indonesia steals U.S. credit-card information and uses it to register websites, establish an identity card, and buy items from the Internet with the stolen credit cards. The anonymity provided by the Internet makes it hard to track down offenders.
