Uses and misuses of Amartya Sen

Article Abstract:

Indian Nobel prizewinner for Economics, Amartya Sen, argues that Indians suffer problems from nutritional and educational deficiencies which could be tackled without great expenditure. He is touring India and arguing that education and primary health care can be provided cheaply since Indian labor costs are low. Sen notes that data on gross domestic product does not provide all the evidence needed on wellbeing, and he has been used as a weapon by critics of economic reform. Sen, however, has criticised policies in Kerala as being insufficiently friendly toward the market.

India's hesitation

Article Abstract:

India is emerging from protectionism into free trade and there are fierce debates about this process. Tariffs have been reduced and restrictions on foreign investment have been eased, but an extra tariff was imposed in 1996and tariffs have again been raised in 1998. The Indian textile industry is protected, and also suffered from barriers when it seeks to export. The government argues that tariff increases are a means of raising revenue rather than a move toward protectionism.

Hello, world

Article Abstract:

India appears to be in the process of becoming more open to the rest of the world, and the country's economic reform is making it an appealing international market. The young people of India, in particular, seem increasingly preoccupied with the making of money.
