Mergers and acquisitions in the European utility market at the beginning of 2001 are presented, with particular attention given to PowerGen's takeover bids from Scottish Power and from the German E.On. The consequences of the possible takeovers are discussed.

UtiliCorp reverses American exodus

The trend towards reduced exposure by American firms in the UK power sector is being reversed by US electricity and gas group UtiliCorp, which made a $2.1 billion bid for Midlands Electricity in October 2001.
