Venerable elders

Article Abstract:

US politics has come to be dominated by issues that concern the aged, such as Social Security and Medicare, rather than the environment or race. Older people are more likely to vote, and demographic change means that the number of older people is increasing. There is a reluctance to grow old in the US, and this is shown by the large sums spent on cosmetic surgery to disguise the effects of ageing. Many older people fear poor health and not having enough money, which is why politicians are focusing on Social Security.

Artist's royalties

Article Abstract:

London's plan to implement 'droit de suite' or royalty taxes for artworks should be challenged as it is baseless and would unfairly increase the tax burdens of collectors and art dealers. The tax has been adopted by nine European countries and one American state, but this tax law may be challenged before it is implemented in the UK. Royalties should not extend to art, and legislation should not increase the incentives given to artists by creating bogus rights.

The pensions conspiracy

Article Abstract:

Americans' near-paranoid pessimism about Social Security's future is unfounded. An effective presidential commission on reform, that included a wide divergence of views, will soon issue three separate, good plans. Even the mildest plan includes investing some of the trust fund in stocks.
