Victorian gas on the back-burner

Article Abstract:

The state government in Victoria, Australia, decided in Jul 1998 to delay plans to privatize the state's natural gas assets. This followed the release by regulators of draft rulings on regulated rates of return that substantially reduced potential earnings. The permitted pre-tax real return on capital has now been raised, but is still not as high as the state government had anticipated. It is not likely that the state government will now make an immediate decision on privatizing the natural gas assets, but the privatization programme may be revived.

Brazilian banks to lead sell-off programme

Article Abstract:

Many of the state-owned banks in Brazil are expected to be privatized in the second half of 1999, with banks in the states of Bahia, Sao Paulo, and Parana in the lead. In addition to the banks many companies in Brazil's electric utility industry are due to be privatized, as well. However, the government is finding it difficult to attract investors for the Brazilian telecommunications industry, especially in the southern and central regions of the country.
