Vlad the courageous: Russia's Zhirinovsky embarrasses his hosts

Article Abstract:

Russian parliamentarian Vladimir Zhirinovsky once again has made hosts uncomfortable on his latest trip abroad, this time to India where he proposed redrawing the map of Central Asia. His remarks promoting a Greater Russia, Greater India, and enlarged Iraq drew official protest in Bangladesh, which received an apology from the Russian embassy. India downplayed his visit by handing the notorious ultra-nationalist off to the Minister of State for External Affairs and the Indian Council for Cultural Affairs.

Threshold trauma: India opts to stay outside the NPT

Article Abstract:

India remains officially opposed to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in its current form but US leaders believe it will not disrupt a NYC conference on the NPT. India remains the only 'borderline' country to have tested a device outside the laboratory, and has refrained from suggesting it actually has weapons. India has resisted a variety of movements and inducements both specifically aimed at drawing the country into the NPT and at generally limiting the spread of fissile materials worldwide.

Arms squeeze

Article Abstract:

India's need for supplies of military spare parts, components and munitions is threatened by Russia's shift to free market principles and debt caused by past Soviet equipment deals. India hopes that Russia will continue the Soviet Union's preferential supplying of military equipment, however prospects remain bleak as Russia cannot afford the special credit the Indians want and India does not have the funds to purchase new equipment.
