Gent's agreement blazes a trail in telecoms

Article Abstract:

Goldman Sachs has won the cross-border deal of the year award in the Acquisitions Monthly Awards 2000 for its role in advising Vodafone on its $56 billion purchase of Airtouch. Goldman Sachs monitored Airtouch for some time, waiting for Vodafone shares to peak. It took immediate action when Vodafone discovered that Bell Atlantic was in merger discussions with Airtouch. An ADR share-plus-cash deal was assembled by Goldman Sachs, and Vodafone made an offer of $54 per share, along with almost complete autonomy for Airtouch's domestic activities.

Vodafone clearance could spark UK telecoms war

Article Abstract:

UK telecommunications concern Vodafone has been obliged to sell its stake in E-Plus Mobilfunk in order to gain approval from the European Commission for its $66 billion purchase of Airtouch. The stake in E-Plus, which is not as profitable as D2, the mobile telecommunications operation formed jointly by Airtouch and Mannesmann, is likely to be sold by the end of Jun 1999. Mannesmann is in a strong position in Germany, and plans to make one European acquisition later in 1999 and two in 2000.
