Vodafone's feeding frenzy

The telecommunications sector has seen a lull in mergers and acquisitions, but in May 2001 there were signs of activity from Vodafone, who completed a number of deals. The media sector was quiet in April and May 2001, but a rise in activity seems likely.

The first quarter of 2001 has been poor for investments compared to last year with a slowdown in mergers and acquisitions. Investment advisers such as Goldman Sachs have suffered and their position in European league tables has been affected.

Under pressure

The effect of the major amounts of debt within the telecommunication sector may be good for mergers and acquisitions. Companies with debt may have to restructure allowing stronger firms to acquire them.
