Vodka chasers

Article Abstract:

The Russian brewing industry has seen a rise in production and the entry of foreign companies into this market. Around a third of the market is accounted for by Baltika and Sun Brewing. Baltika brews premium brands and is 73% Scandinavian owned. Sun Brewing has a majority stake held by an Indian conglomerate and has set up a number of breweries which focus on the cheaper end of the market. The price of vodka has been cheap in Russia, but it is rising, while sales of beer are also increasing. Other foreign companies wish to make beer in Russia after sees exports slump following a drop in the value of the Russian ruble.

Battling brewers

Article Abstract:

Carlsberg will announce a reduction in the stake held by the Carlsberg Foundation to under 50% from 55%, allowing the company to take part in a trend toward restructuring of the industry in Europe. Danone could sell Kronenbourg, and Bass aims to sell its brewing business, while potential buyers include Scottish and Newcastle, South African Breweries and Anheuser Busch. Carlsberg plans non-brewing disposals, a move which will help in tackling debts but is unlikely to provide funds for acquisitions.
