Running out of recruits

Article Abstract:

Many UK firms are facing severe skills shortages. The problem is particularly acute in the catering, construction, high-tech, accountancy and insurance sectors, but a survey has revealed that shortage of skilled labour is a widespread business problem. The problem applies to all levels of staff and to most areas of the country, although firms in the Midlands area are experiencing the worst problems. The skills shortage is creating pressure on wage levels, but a decline in economic growth and the introduction of the government's welfare-to-work scheme should ease the situation.

Forging links

Article Abstract:

The UK has 150 Education Business Partnerships (EBPs). The number of companies involved rose by 70% to 200,000 during the four years from 1993, but a survey has revealed that only 5.6% of EPB management board partners are from small businesses. EPBs benefit pupils by offering them opportunities to learn more about jobs and the ways of business, but benefits for the company include employee motivation, raising of the company's profile in the community, and more effective recruitment.

One careful owner

Article Abstract:

A lack of suitable privately owned UK firms coming onto the market has forced up prices, resulting in owners wishing to sell getting a good rate of return for their firm. Venture capital firms are prepared to offer above market prices for firms who can prove efficiency and profitability during 2000. Information technology firms are extremely popular acquisition options, with US firms looking to the UK to buy.
