Voter's conduct to influence market mood

Article Abstract:

Investors in the Philippine financial markets are warily watching the conduct of elections, hoping to pull out in time when the elections turn unruly. This behavior is manifested in the stock exchange where the composite index has been showing between 1% to 2.5% decreases in anticipation of poll-related violence. Market analysts caution investors to look into a country's fundamentals in making their investment decisions, since this would ultimately determine the returns on their investments. The Philippines is expected to post a growth between 3% to 4%, below the initial 6% growth projections for 1998.

In 1996, China stocks were good picks; Japan lagged

Article Abstract:

China, Hong Kong and Taiwan were the biggest growth opportunities in 1996. China's Shenzhen and Shanghai stock exchanges saw prices seesaw throughout the year but closed above than expected. Hong Kong leaped 34% in the Hang Seng Index and analysts believe that the colony's turnover to China in July 1997 will have no negative impact on stock prices. Taiwan showed a good performance and finished 1996 at 6933.64 points, a 34% increase from 1995. Elsewhere in Asia, stock markets are generally forecast to have a good year.

Bargains still exist in Japan for careful stock pickers

Article Abstract:

Japan's troubled stock market may provide bargains since numerous companies are trading for less than their paper value. Nonetheless, analysts and fund managers warn that the stock pickers should be careful in picking their stocks. Prospective buyers should look at the stock's ability to be freed and not frittered away. Analysts add that auto makers, financial institutions and small businesses may provide the best value.
