WTO candidates chafe at slow pace of accession

Article Abstract:

Countries hoping for membership in the World Trade Organization are becoming frustrated as the process has stretched out over a period of at least ten years. Particularly, Russia, Ukraine and Vietnam hoping to be included in the Hong Kong talks are on hold until next year. Potential member countries are concerned over increasing concessions required for World Trade Organization membership.

Russia turns up gas pressure

Article Abstract:

Russian authorities are increasing pressure on former Soviet countries to come into line with Russian policy issues by controlling natural gas supplies. With popular revolutions bringing Western-style governments to Georgia and the Ukraine the Kremlin has begun to control energy deals, offering greater subsidies to those countries who follow Moscow.

Trade negotiations between the United States and Russia are continuing with the goal of Russia joining the World Trade Organization. The long held goal by the United States is to ease Russia into the global economy.
